The music commonly known as jazz, owes its origin to the music of Africa, specifically West Africa. African cultural elements (e.g., music, dance, foods, languages) brought to the New World via the Atlantic Slave Trade, mixed with various European cultural elements in the Caribbean, South America, and North America, resulting in unique approaches to music and dance that led directly to jazz.
