CLASSICAL | "Bach to the Future"

Johann Sebastian Bach would have been 232 years old on March 21, 2017, but musically he's as young as ever. This Sunday, the Society for Chamber Music in Rochester proves the point by rounding up a list of notable players for a different kind of Bach birthday tribute. Most of the music on the program is indeed Bach's, but you'll hear it in arrangements credited to some notable composers — Gounod, Rachmaninoff, Beethoven, and Mendelssohn — as well as the violinist Dmitri Sitkovetski's arrangement for string trio of several of Bach's "Goldberg Variations." The concert winds up with some jazzy pseudo-baroque in the form of Claude Bolling's "Suite for Flute and Jazz Piano Trio." This tuneful confection from 1973 was ubiquitous throughout the 1970's thanks to a Jean-Pierre Rampal recording that stayed on the Billboard charts for two years. The RPO's Principal Flute Rebecca Gilbert does the solo honors, with support from pianist Chiao-Wen Cheng, bassist Jeff Campbell, and drummer Dave Mancini.

Society for Chamber Music in Rochester will present "Bach to the Future" on Sunday, March 26, at Hochstein Performance Hall, 50 North Plymouth Avenue. 4 p.m. $35 general; students free with current ID. 624-1301;
