CLASSICAL | "Colors of France"

The next stop on the Society for Chamber Music in Rochester's season-long survey of music from around the world is "Colors of France." Since French composers have long been noted for their way with wind instruments, those colors will range across the spectrum, from the sinuous solo flute of Debussy's "Syrinx," performed by Rebecca Gilbert, to the raucous highs and lows of Poulenc's irresistible Sextet for Winds and Piano, which includes all of the evening's crew: oboist Erik Behr, clarinetist William Amsel, bassoonist Matthew McDonald, hornist W. Peter Kurau, and pianist Chiao-Wen Cheng. In between, the musicians regroup for bon-bons by Ravel, Satie, and others.

Society for Chamber Music in Rochester will present "Colors of France" on Friday, November 20, at Hochstein, 50 North Plymouth Avenue. 7:30 p.m. $30, students free with ID. 413-1574; ChamberMusicRochester.org.
