CLASSICAL | Jon Nakamatsu

After he dashes off Saint-Saëns's G Minor Concerto with the RPO on Thursday and Saturday, pianist Jon Nakamatsu will travel up East Avenue to Third Presbyterian Church, where he'll join the Society for Chamber Music in Rochester in its final concert of the season. His repertoire on Sunday will change from a quintessentially French composer to two very German composers. As a solo artist, Nakamatsu will perform Brahms's jewel-like Intermezzi, Op. 118; and as a chamber musician, he'll play Richard Strauss's Piano Quartet, Op. 13. Strauss is renowned for big symphonic poems and bigger operas, but in his early years he wrote a few chamber works, of which this seldom-performed piece is one of the most significant. The program is rounded out by another late-Romantic rarity, a 1902 Serenade in C for String Trio by the Hungarian composer and pianist Ernö von Dohnanyi: Viennese pastry with a touch of paprika.

Jon Nakamatsu will perform with the Society for Chamber Music in Rochester on Sunday, May 3, at Third Presbyterian Church, 4 Meigs Street. 7:30 p.m. $30.
