CLASSICAL | Publick Musick plays Boccherini

Luigi Boccherini (1743-1805) is perhaps best-known for writing a famous minuet that has become a musical shorthand for "18th-century elegance." But during his lifetime, he was a famous cello virtuoso (his B-flat cello concerto is still popular) and a noted composer, of chamber music in general and of string quintets, written to feature his own playing, in particular. They are not performed nearly as often as they ought to be, but Publick Musick devotes this weekend's concert to four of Boccherini's string quintets. All of Boccherini's chamber works exhibit a refined sense of instrumental color and texture, and two of the quintets on this program include Spanish dances, the fandango and the follia. (Boccherini spent much of his creative life in Spain.) These elegant works will be in the excellent, historically informed hands of violinists Cynthia Roberts and Boel Gidholm, violist Daniel Elyar, and cellists Christopher Haritatos and Beiliang Zhu, all performing baroque-style instruments.

If you are a fan of early music, you can take advantage of a Rochester Early Music Festival (REMF) pass ($30). Besides a $5 discount for the November 1 Publick Musick concert, it provides discounts for fall concerts by Pegasus Early Music, First Inversion, and Musica Spei, and admission to the November 13 REMF Gala Concert at St. Anne Church, 1600 Mt. Hope Avenue. Information at musicaspei.org.

Publick Musick will perform Sunday, November 1, at Incarnate Word Lutheran Church, 597 East Avenue. 4 p.m.; pre-concert talk at 3:15. $10-$20. publickmusick.org.
