CLASSICAL | RPO Independence Day Concerts

The fireworks will not just be in the sky for the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra's outdoor concerts this week, which include two patriotic programs conducted by Ward Stare. On July 4, the RPO performs its annual free Independence Day salute on the Main Street Bridge, starting at 9 p.m.; and on Saturday, July 7, at 8 p.m., the show moves to CMAC in Canandaigua (see ticket information below). Both concerts feature RPO Principal Trumpet Herb Smith narrating Aaron Copland's "Lincoln Portrait," along with favorites from Leonard Bernstein's "Candide" and "West Side Story," John Williams' movie scores, Sousa's "Stars and Stripes Forever," and Tchaikovsky's "1812 Overture." These being Ward Stare concerts, there are also some interesting additions to the programs: George Gershwin's "Cuban Overture," an "Armed Forces Medley" arranged by Jeff Tyzik, and "An American Overture" by Rochester-born composer Adolphus Hailstork.

The Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra performs Wednesday, July 4, on the Main Street Bridge, downtown. 9 p.m. Free. And on Saturday, July 7, at CMAC, 3355 Marvin Sands Drive. 8 p.m. $18-$43. 454-2100; rpo.org; cmacevents.com.
