CLASSICAL | RPO's 'Carmina Burana'

The Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra and the Rochester Oratorio Society, rather daringly, are going secular this holiday season with Carl Orff's "Carmina Burana." No stars or mangers here: this "scenic cantata" is based on medieval poetry celebrating the joys of drinking ale, eating roasted swans, and generally carrying on, under the watchful eye of the goddess Fortuna. Pagan it may be, but "Carmina Burana" has been one of classical music's greatest hits since 1937. This concert will also include one last nod to Leonard Bernstein's centenary this year with the jazzy, lyrical "Chichester Psalms."

Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra presents "Carmina Burana" on Thursday, December 13, 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, December 15, 8 p.m. at Eastman Theatre's Kodak Hall, 26 Gibbs Street. $24-$106. 454-2100. rpo.org.
