Re: “Bike shop peddles opportunity

What a great asset in our Rochester community! Now, let's open another location in my Northwest area of the city! Double the efforts, double the opportunities for our youth! #TeamworkWorks #NWPam

Re: “Rochester's school choice policy is under review

"Assuming that parents don't select a neighborhood school because it is low-performing isn't accurate, Powell says."

Actually, this was exactly why we didn't choose the elementary school at the end of our street, as its test scores were the lowest in our NW zone, and one of the lowest in the district, at the time.

We also looked at the curriculum and extracurriculars offered, and made our decision after considering all options. We even considered formally/officially homeschooling, as moving to a different location was not an affordable option for us.

As a more holistic and multi-layered solution, I believe there should be a metro or county-wide school district, or multiple pie-shaped districts as suggested by Dr. Cala years ago, as that would give all county parents the most options to find the particular public school that is the best fit for their individual child, whether they live in a rural area of our county or in the middle of the city of Rochester. Simply moving is frequently not a viable option for families, and students should not have limited access to materials and programs that are standard in surrounding districts.

Re: “WEEK AHEAD: Events for the week of Monday, August 31

The Northwest Neighborhood Associations (Lyell-Otis, Maplewood, Charlotte, People of Dutchtown, CHNA/JOSANA, Edgerton, Westside Neighbors, and Brown Square) are hosting a NORTHWEST CITY COUNCIL CANDIDATES FORUM at Aquinas Institute (located at Dewey Avenue) on Wednesday, September 2nd, beginning at 7pm.

Come meet all of the candidates running to fill the NW District City Council seat! All the candidates are invited, and written questions will be taken from audience members. This is your chance to hear from the candidates about how they would help govern the City and represent the Northwest neighborhoods!

All NW area voters are highly encouraged to attend!

Pamela R. Davis, a write-in candidate :)

Re: “Changing my mind about charter schools

Instead of paying for charter schools, we should allow parents to choose other public schools in our county's suburbs, creating a metro school district/s. The focus needs to be kept on "what works best for the children", and not get bogged down with which zip code in which you happen to lay your head to rest.

There are so many people living in the suburbs that do not have children, that they should have the option to offer their tax dollars to be allocated to sponsor an out-of-district student, if the funding which would follow them from the city district isn't equal to the actual needed amount.
