Daily Choices: What to do on Friday, November 2

FILMS: Movies opening today in wide release include "Flight," "The Man with the Iron Fists," "Wreck-It Ralph," and "Fun Size." The Dryden Theatre will show "Being There," "Castle in the Sky," "A Face in the Crowd," "Hangs Up," "The Wolfman," and "You've Been Trumped." Visit rochestercitynewspaper.com/rochester/movies for previews and reviews of films.

MUSIC: ZZ Top has established itself as its own genre that supersedes just rock 'n' roll and the blues. "La Futura" is the hirsute hipster trio's new Rick Rubin-produced platter, and it's the group's first studio album in nine years. It's classic ZZ Top with a smoldering tone, swaggering back beat, and Frigidaire cool. At the center of it all is Billy F. Gibbons' swampy guitar and gravel-road voice. With Dusty Hill (bass) and Frank Beard (drums) as the ultimate laid-back rhythm section, the band sounds fresh and exciting without forsaking the Texas boogie that compels diehards to come to the tube-driven altar. Check it out tonight at the Main Street Armory (900 E. Main St., 7 p.m., $55-$60, rochestermainstreetarmory.com).

ART: Tonight's First Friday features many new exhibition openings around Rochester as well as open studios and galleries in The Hungerford Building (1115 E. Main St.) and beyond, taking place around 6-9 p.m. Learn what in particular is offered at firstfridayrochester.org, and visit our arts listings in the events calendar at rochestercitynewspaper.com/rochester/EventSearch for more information.

THEATER: Nazareth College Arts Center (4245 East Ave.) will host a one-night only performance of "Letters Home," in which actors will read actual letters sent by men and women during active duty in the Middle East. The show goes on at 7 p.m., and tickets are $10-$40. There will be a free pre-performance lecture with William Massolia, Artistic Director/Founder of Griffin Theatre Company, who adapted the letters for the stage, in the Peace Theater (room A14 in the lower level of the Arts Center.) For tickets to "Letters Home" or more info, call 389-2170 or visit artscenter.naz.edu.

MUSIC: Somewhere….over the rainbow, there’s a place to hear some great music tonight! You might not have to travel all the way to Kansas (or Oz) to hear that tune though: tonight the RPO presents Over the Rainbow: Celebrating the Music of Harold Arlen at 8 p.m. in Kodak Hall at Eastman Theatre (433 East Main St., rpo.org). Tickets run $15-$79, with a repeat performance tomorrow night.

THEATER: The Blue Man Group will perform at Auditorium Theatre (885 Main St.) tonight, 8 p.m., and follow up with shows on Saturday and Sunday as well. Tickets are $39.50-$64.50, and available by calling 800-745-3000 or visiting ticketmaster.com. For more info, visit rbtl.org.

MUSIC: Are you a metal diehard? Then you probably don’t want to miss the Tribute to the Big 4(Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth, and Anthrax of course) tonight at the Montage Music Hall (50 Chestnut St., 232-1520, themontagemusichall.com). Music starts at 8 p.m., and get ready to throw down.

SPECIAL EVENT: Celebrate local foods and beverages, as well as fine crafts, at Cuisine Culture: Bountiful Bowls, held tonight at the Mill Art Center and Gallery (61 N. Main St., Honeoye Falls). Two seatings at 6 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. offer dinner (for $55.50) or dinner and a handcrafted bowl ($95.50). Get your tickets at cuisineculturenow.com.

MUSIC: Want to spend Friday night letting loose and blowing your horn? Well, you might want to head to Nazareth College (Wilmot Recital Hall, 4245 East Ave., 389-2700) to check out Steven Zugelder putting on a show called The Contemporary Trombone, and you can expect slides to be sliding and his horn to be a-blowin’. Music starts at 7:30 p.m. and is free.
