Daily Choices: What to do on Thursday, April 11 

Film: The documentary “Two Who Dared” will screen for free at 7:30 p.m. at the First Unitarian Church of Rochester (220 Winton Rd. S., rochesterunitarian.org). The film tells the story of a Unitarian minister, Waitstill Sharp, and his wife, Martha, who rescued refugees from Nazi-occupied Sudetenland in 1939. The film will screen again at the church on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. Both screenings will be followed by a discussion with Alex Strasser, one of the survivors who was rescued by the Sharps.

Music: The Dirty Bourbon River Show, a roots rock and jazz quintet from Louisiana, will rock the house with Latin, gypsy, circus, and traditional New Orleans styles at Abilene Bar and Lounge (153 Liberty Pole Way, abilenebarandlounge.com). The show starts at 8 p.m. Tickets are $50 each and can only be purchased at the door, but the concert is free to anyone who brings canned goods to donate to the Catholic Family Center’s food cupboard. Lecture: What’s so funny ‘bout peace, justice, and poetry readings? Nazareth College’s fifth annual Writing for Peace and Justice poetry competition starts at 6 p.m. in Room 38 of the campus’ Golisano Academic Center (4245 East Ave.). The evening kicks off with a keynote speech, “Poetry as Transformative Power,” by French poet and teacher Kathryn Jospé. The competition will feature readings of both original and classic Francophone poems by students from seven local high schools and four local colleges. The event is free and open to the public. Lecture: Ladies: It’s never too late to reorganize, reenergize, and renew your life. Get a new lease on life at “Your Remarkable Reinvention: Energize Your Third Age Options,” an Our Community Café lecture and conversation at the American Association of University Women (494 East Ave., auwwrochester.org). Music: Despite beginning as a studio project in the fall of 2007, AudioInFlux has since evolved into an exhaustive — and exhausting — live concert experience. This Rochester quintet is one of the most aptly tagged troupes around. Its performances are nothing if not lessons in musical mutability, bringing jazz, funk, soul, hip-hop, and reggae together into a dance-tastic frenzy. The group originally made its name as a four piece, with occasional help from a formidable horn section, before adding MC Marcus Mdotcoop, the last brick in an impressive funk fortress. NYC-band Consider the Source, described as “sci-fi Middle Eastern fusion”, also performs.
