Daily Choices: What to do on Tuesday, January 29

Literature: Visit the Welles-Brown Room of the Rush Rhees Library (University of Rochester, River Campus) 1-4 p.m. today for a unique event that will offer visitors the opportunity to connect with many people from different backgrounds. The event is called "The Human Library," at which visitors can "borrow" a Human Book (a volunteer willing to share stories with others) for 30 minutes, for one-on-one or small-group conversations. The event is free to attend. For more information, call 275-5506 or email

Music: Ska is supposed to be about happy-sunny times, but Reel Big Fish decided to take a different track in its most recent album, “Candy Coated Fury.” It’s supposed to be funny, but even the band admits that it’s some spiteful stuff. It’s still insanely danceable, and I have no doubt “Everyone Else Is an A**hole” is going to be in the background of like every commercial ever soon enough. However, I found the disc a bit jarring. There is certain to be a mix of the old tunes as well as the new at this show. If you like to get your ska on there is no doubt this is where you need to be, pretending it’s not always cloudy in Rochester. Reel Big Fish plays Tuesday, January 29, 8 p.m. at Water Street Music Hall, 204 N. Water St. $20-$24. 16+ w/ID.

Lecture: The Tuesday Topics series held at Kate Gleason Auditorium at Central Library (115 South Ave.) continues today with a presentation by Dr. Ian Wilson, co-founder of Synthesis Collaborative and curator of the ongoing street art endeavor, Wall\Therapy. His talk, "Wall/Therapy in Rochester: The Visual Intervention of Public Art," takes place 12:12-12:52 p.m. and is free to attend. For more information, call 428-8350, or visit

Music: The Kilbourn Concert series tonight presents Brooklyn Rider, a named-for-its-location string quartet that will be performing at Kilbourn Hall (26 Gibbs St., at 8 p.m. Tickets run $10-$20, or $38-$65 as part of the subscription series.

Special Event: Tap and Table (284 Exchange St.) will host a Sierra Nevada Ovila Belgian Beer Dinner tonight at 6:30 p.m., featuring a four course meal paired with beers from Sierra Nevada's award-winning Ovila line. The cost to attend is $49 + gratuity. For more information, call 319-3388 or visit

Music: DJ Ghetto Blaster will be mixing reggae and hip-hop tonight at Club Clarissa’s (293 Clarissa St.), so if you want to get down and dance on a Tuesday night, head on over. Call 232-3430 with any questions.
