Daily Choices: What to do on Tuesday, March 5 

Recreation: Forest bathing – otherwise known as shinrin-yoku in its native Japan – is, well, sort of just what it sounds like: A soothing walk through a forest, while breathing in organic substances, called phytoncides, which further the relaxation. Sounds lovely, no? Dr. Les Moore, the Director of Integrative Medicine at Clifton Springs Hospital, will lead a free forest bathing walk at 7:30 p.m. at the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Monroe County (249 Highland Ave.). Music: Despite several break-ups over the years, The Queers have been playing Ramones-inspired punk rock since the early 1980’s. And though the comparisons make perfect sense, the band adds its own harmony and pop polish twists. With close to 40 members having gone in and out of its ranks, guitarist/lead vocalist Joe Queer is the one constant in the band. Bill mates the Anderson Stingrays — purveyors of the mighty three-chord punk rock, Queers disciples, and one of my favorite new Rochester bands — add mucho buzz-saw chaos. The Stingrays’ debut “Rock ’n’ Roll Party in Space” was produced by Joe Queer. The band recently contributed a tune to the Screeching Weasel tribute “Screech Like a Weasel” and has recently released its “Goon Squad” EP. Art: Is there more to white space than meets the eye? How many different ways can artists interpret white? See white like you've never seen it before at "What Shape is White," the new exhibition at International Art Acquisitions (3300 Monroe Ave.) through Mar. 31. The free show features floral imagery from artists David Kerstetter, Monteiro Prestes, Peggy Corthouts,and Edward Loedding, all working with the color white. Music: Brothers Zachary and Thatcher Lyman will present a concert of music for trumpet and organ Tuesday, March 5, at St. Mary’s Church, featuring works by Johann Baptist Georg Neruda and American composers Vincent Persichetti and David Sampson. Organist Thatcher Lyman will also perform solo organ works by Felix Mendelssohn and Anton Heiller. Thatcher is currently pursuing his DMA degree in organ performance at the Eastman School of Music, and has already earned degrees from Oberlin College and the University of York (England). Zachary Lyman is an associate professor of trumpet and music theory at Pacific Lutheran University in Washington, and actively performs in orchestral, chamber, and solo concerts, including with the New England and Boston Philharmonics. Literary: Poet and essayist Ellen Bryant Voigt comes to the University of Rochester at 5 p.m. as the latest visiting author in the school’s Plutzik Reading Series. Voigt, who was once the poet laureate of Vermont and now teaches in the MFA program at Warren Wilson College in North Carolina, has published seven books of poetry – including the Pulitzer Prize finalist “Messenger: New and Selected Poems,” in 2007 – as well as two essay collections. Her new collection of poems, “Headwaters,” comes out in September. Voigt’s reading will be held in the Welles-Brown Room in Rush Rhees Library, on UR’s River Campus (252 Elmwood Ave.).
