Daily Choices: What to do on Tuesday, October 2

Big Sandy, electoral math, and how to make a gas mask out of notebook paper

ART: Go see "Water Work," featuring paintings in water-based media by Chris Baker, Barbara Fox, and Roland "Chip" Stevens at Oxford Gallery. Today's hours are noon-5 p.m., and the show remains on view through Saturday, October 6. Admission is free. More info: 271-5885, oxfordgallery.com.

MUSIC: Fly westward, my son! Big Sandy and His Fly-Rite Boys will be tearing it up tonight at Abilene (153 Liberty Pole Way, abilenebarandlounge.com) bringing its roots-country, string-laden stylings with it. Music starts at 8:30 p.m., tickets run $20-$25. The group has been around since 1988, so you know the boys know how to get down. Just be sure you're ready to swing yourself.

LECTURE: Learn about the link between "Mathematics and the Election" at a lecture given by Steven J. Brams tonight at 7:30 p.m. at the Warren Hunting Smith Library at Hobart and William Smith Colleges (Pultney Street in Geneva). For more information, visit hws.edu.

MUSIC: Originally from Rochester, but now hailing from Brooklyn, singer-songwriter Micah will be hitting up the Bug Jar (219 Monroe Ave., bugjar.com) tonight, music starting at 9 p.m., cover costs $6-$8. He's a pretty cool cat all around, so check him out. Kirk Stevens, Hunter Dialectic, and Cory Kesselring will open up the show, and DJ Professor follows the bands at midnight.

LECTURE: Learn how to survive just about anything at "How to Make a Gas Mask with Notebook Paper and Other Lessons I Learned the Hard Way" with Erica Bryant today, 10 a.m., at Finger Lakes Community College (3325 Marvin Sands Drive, Canandaigua). The lecture is free. More info: 785-1389, flcc.edu.

MUSIC: Sure, genes may run in the family, but that doesn't mean musical talent necessarily does. Luckily it did for local jazz constantly-gigging group Shared Genes, featuring father/son act Sam and Ted Nicolosi, who will be playing tonight at Bistro 135 (135 W. Commercial St., East Rochester, bistro135.net) tonight at 6 for a free show. Grab some drinks, grab some food, and enjoy some jazz.
