DANCE | '50Live'

SUNY Geneseo is celebrating 50 years of dance with a performance that will bring together former students from across four decades for a program of original works by alumni, faculty, current students, and guest artists. Alumni from 1976 through 2017 will join the Geneseo Dance Ensemble for "50Live: Dancing Past to Present Celebrating 50 Years" this weekend. More than a dozen alumni-created works are listed on the bill, including a new construction from Labanotation of "Songs from the Hebrides" — believed to be the first modern dance piece to be copyrighted — created by Geneseo Professor Emerita Nona Schurman in 1951. A piece by guest artist-in-residence Chung-Fu Chang will also be presented: "Wandering River" is passed on the water sleeve dance, a traditional Chinese style dating back more than 2,000 years. Preceding the performances will be Lobby Dances at 7:15 p.m.; pre-concert talks at 7:30 p.m.; and a slide history of 50 years of dance at 7:45 p.m. Professor of Dance Jonette Lancos is artistic director and producer.

"50Live: Dancing Past to Present Celebrating 50 Years" takes place Thursday, April 19, through Sunday, April 22, at SUNY Geneseo's Alice Austin Theatre (1 College Circle, Geneseo). 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday; 2 p.m. on Sunday. $10. bbo.geneseo.edu.
