Re: “A soccer team gives us an example of patriotism

If the team burned the flag before the game, would that constitute standing up for "the principles and values of the United States"? Is any exercise of one's free-speech rights, by definition, patriotic? Even if the target is a symbol of our nation itself? What if a team knelt to show their opposition to legalized same-sex marriage? Would that be a patriotic act? Would you defend them to the same extent?
