It’s going to be a busy couple of months of storytelling and song at Downstairs Cabaret Theatre’s two locations. DCT’s spring program features four shows, including war dramas and a prison-escape caper, and the theater will also present a string of singer-songwriters in its Rochester Folkus series.
  • Returning to Downstairs Cabaret this month is “The Accidental Hero,” a multimedia soldier’s tale in which actor Patrick Dewane tells how his grandfather liberated Czech towns during World War II (April 12-13, at 3450 Winton Place). That same week, Dewane will present his new play, “The I-Won’t-Be-Home-for-Christmas Club,” which weaves together three stories of peace and generosity during wartime (April 13-14, at 3450 Winton Place).

  • Next up is “Jenn & Eric: Simply Acoustic, Simply Amazing!” featuring Jenn Cristy, who performed with John Mellancamp’s band, and Springsteen tribute artist Eric Brown. The duo will perform a large catalog of rock, pop, folk, blues, and original music (April 25-May 5).

  • And in “Riding the Midnight Express,” Billy Hayes recounts the true story of his mid-70’s escape from a Turkish prison. His book, “Midnight Express,” was published in 18 languages, and the basis for Oliver Stone’s 1978 film of the same name. (May 9-19, at 20 Windsor Street)
The Rochester Folkus series (at 20 Windsor Street) is an ongoing collaboration between DCT and retired RIT president William Destler, and the series showcases musicians performing a variety of folk sub-genres. Upcoming events are:
  • April 10: Peg Dolan with Sharon McHargue
  • April 24: Shady Rill
  • May 22: Howie Bursen
  • May 29: Bonnie Abrams and Allen Hopkins
General admission tickets for theater range from $25 to $33, and Rochester Folkus admission is $10 per show. More information is available at
