FILM | 'A Piece of the Dream'

Based in Rochester's JOSANA neighborhood, Greentopia project Green Visions is a community-centered workforce development program that sees neighbors working together to install and cultivate cut flower gardens on once-vacant lots. Flowers planted remove toxins from the soil in a process called phytoremediation, and the program is also a youth development effort that provides kids with job skills. Flowers harvested from the lots are sold as bouquets at the East Avenue, Perinton, and Penfield Wegmans by program participants. Green Visions is featured in "A Piece of the Dream," an immersive documentary website about the multi-faceted issues faced by workers across New York State. Viewers can engage with the site to learn about the marginalizing impacts of low wages, gentrification, working without documentation, and finding work after incarceration.

A screening event will take place this week, at which visitors can meet the filmmakers, funders, participants, former graduates, program trainers, and director. The party includes free drinks, candy and popcorn concessions for purchase, a 50/50 raffle, and a raffle to win a pair of tickets for Greentopia's 2019 Dinner on the Bridge event.

The "A Piece of the Dream" screening event takes place on Friday, September 21, from 7 to 10 p.m. at the Arbor Loft, 17 Pitkin Street. $10 suggested donation.
