FOLK | Rosie Newton and The Green Mountain Playboys

I just want to get this out there: people ask me, they say, "Frank, what's the difference between a violin and a fiddle?" And I tell them, "A violin sings; a fiddle cries." Practically any style of music that is born of or champions the fiddle is in Rosie Newton's wheelhouse. Folk, bluegrass, country, Irish, old tyme, roots, and zydeco make their way to the Woodstock native's fiddle. She recently came off the road having toured with Preston Frank, and is in a duo with Richie Stearns, where her fiddle cries as Stearns's banjo gently weeps.

Rosie Newton and The Green Mountain Playboys perform Thursday, March 16, at Abilene Bar and Lounge, 153 Liberty Pole Way. 8 p.m. $10. 232-3230; abilenebarandlounge.com; rosienewtonmusic.com.
