Another way of looking at this is that Sanders was our nation's latest and closest attempt at nominating a truly Progressive or progressive "accomplished and successful politician, a break from the past." This is to consider the present situation not as the end but as part of a timeline that stretches into the future.

I will remind us that the last great major-party Progressive candidate was Dennis Kucinich in 2008 who was polling at 4% in a field of several candidates.

I will also take this time to note that in that election we had a Latino, Black, and female candidate. That was remarkable as a sign of our nation reducing bigotry.

The current election certainly knocks those aspects out of the fore, but they are still there.
