Re: “Can't local Democrats be faithful to their ideals?

"Johnny", yes of course I am aware that in 1861 the Republican Party was the party of Union, Federal Supremacy, and Abolition. However, Douglass first supported the Radical Democracy Party in 1864 and was then a member of the Equal Rights Party, a party focused on progressive politics.…

Regarding Anthony and abortion, I hope you will take the time and reread the essay, there is no mention of abortion. No one I know likes abortion, yet it is generally accepted Democrats favor comprehensive health care for women and their right to make their own medical choices which in turn would reduce the need for abortions. I suggest you visit the Susan B. Anthony house and ask to speak with Deborah Hughes to get some expert insight into the matter.

There is no valid argument that neither of these Rochestarians were progressives.

To be clear, there are shared values and the party leadership is responsible to ensure that candidates they ask us to support are at least somewhat in align with them. As Mr. Baxter has said himself, he does not agree with any of the stated values. We trusted the party and they let us down.

Re: “Where are the women?

So is it women, or the American system? Canada has far more equal representation in its Parliament, in its number of provincial leaders and has had a female prime minister. Both the head of state and head of government in the UK are women, and the new leader of the Free World, Germany has just re-elected a women for her fourth term. They all have families, perhaps there is something in our system and culture that that holds women back and needs to be addressed. Thank you for this article.

Re: “Feedback 4/26

Regarding my piece on women and fear, I have been away so please excuse the delay. I stand corrected on the number of women killed each year, my error and my responsibility. I should have been more diligent in checking my sources, that is mine to own.

However, whether the number is 1,000 or 3,000 or 10,000 it does not change the fact that women are disproportionality the victims in domestic violence situations and that in America they are murdered by gunfire at rates far greater than in other developed countries. I hope no one misses the point that women in these situations have a fact based fear of being gunned down as the woman was in San Bernardino. If anyone remains in doubt I might suggest a face to face with some of them, I spent 30 years dealing with domestic violence as a police officer and have witnessed the consequences first hand, if someone interprets relating those experiences as rants, so be it. I take responsibility for the incorrect number...and for speaking out about this issue.

I agree with expert sociologist Gavin de Becker who so summed it up perfectly, At core, men are afraid women will laugh at them, while at core, women are afraid men will kill them.

Re: “[UPDATED] Telephone poll asks about Barnhart, Warren

An improvement over a guy who was instrumental in getting College Town rolling in the South Wedge among other things? She may be a nice choice but it's hard to imagine anyone doing more than Bronson has to improve his district.

Re: “School integration is more than enrichment

Mark, Sorry friend, I live in this district and I find I have to challenge your assertion. These people very much believe that it matters who their child sits next to in school. That is indeed the issue for them. They don't want their kid sitting next to a "city kid". And appealing to the common good is looked upon as a negative argument not a positive one. This is the place where the powers that be fought for exclusionary town prayers, the district has a Good News Club that teaches creationism as an after school program and the most important political issue is the registration of assault rifles. It is sad and ugly, but appealing to reason and the belief that it just can't be that bad and pervasive is simply naive.

Re: “City of the gun

This was an extremely interesting presentation. It did much to dispel the myth that somehow the guns being used in crimes in Rochester are other than those owned by "law abiding" citizens. It turns out about 80% of the guns used here are legally purchased here. And that doesn't even touch on the number of children injured every year by the mishandling and improper storage of guns.
