OUR MISSION Gastronaut; a person with a keen appreciation for food; a person who is willing to go to great lengths to explore, learn and find exotic, and often, bizarre, foods to eat (synonyms: foodie, chowhound, gourmand, gourmet) Gastronauts Academy was created to empower wannabe foodies who want a little something different when searching their passion for food and drink exploration! By developing specialized classes, courses and adventures, the Gastronauts Academy’s mission is to take its guests on a deep-dive into the minds of leading tastemakers and thinkers, accelerate learning by social interaction, provide unique experiences and create an easy on-ramp for students who want to follow their passion by taking the leap from hobbyist to pro in the hospitality world! OUR STORY The Gastronauts Academy started in New York City in 2010 as a pop-up cooking school and quickly grew specializing in food and drink events blended with unique once-in-a-lifetime experiences. Founded by renowned chef and food educator Danny Boome, his vison has always been to inspire everyday home cooks and wannabe foodies to follow their passion and explore new tastes and experiences. As we venture forward, we have chosen Rochester NY as our new home to host our new teaching kitchen, event space and media studio that will open in the summer of 2017. Why Rochester? Well, Rochester, NY is the gateway to possibly the most important food and drink region in North America. With the Finger Lakes at our door step, it is home to some of the best wineries, craft brewing and distilling, agriculture and coffee roasters in the country! Furthermore, the state of New York happens to be the birth place of the North American wine industry and leading innovator of the fastest growing craft beer, spirits & coffee industry in the US, with an average of two breweries, one distillery and coffee roaster opening a month! This is all perfectly surrounded by what can only be described as a nations pantry. At least 25% of NY State’s farming comes from within a 60-mile radius of our HQ in Rochester, which is farmed by the most passionate purveyors and champions of organic and sustainable farming. This unique location allows the Gastronausts Academy to tap into an array of leading taste makers, specialized food & drink combinations, guest chefs, mixologists and allowing our classes, courses and adventures to be truly ahead of the curve. THE ORIGINAL GASTRONAUT Chef, Father, International TV Personality, Brand Ambassador, Traveler and Adventurer, are just a few ways to describe Danny Boome. Danny is an internationally renowned food and drink educator that has built a brand on empowering wannabe foodies by inspiring them to take the leap of faith in the kitchen. Danny fills students with confidence by translating the technical aspects of food and drink into easy to understand steps and common sense knowledge. Danny and his global brand have gained national media, being recognized as a global influencer as television host, journalist and activist. In 2015, he was nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Culinary Host by the National Academy of Arts and Science, which recognizes excellence in the television industry for his work a host of Good Food America on ZLiving Network, a prominent leader of digital health and wellness programming. Additionally, Sierra Magazine selected him as one of the nine chefs changing the world. With a decade of broadcasting experience, Danny has built his brand in the U.S. and across the globe, becoming well known to audiences for his culinary work and dynamic personality. Danny empowers viewers and consumers teaching with fun, healthy lifestyle choices and creative options. As a journalist and commentator with ABC’s the Chew and Food Network, Danny has interviewed the world’s leading trendsetters and tastemakers—networking and cultivating relationships with the world’s food and drink leaders. Danny has taken his passion to create a better food world for all by developing the Better FED Project, a boutique foundation and think-tank that has worked on some of the most extensive food problems the world and the U.S. faces today. Danny has worked with local and national governments on creating better food educational programs, helping integrate healthy food options into low income areas, supporting farmers by gaining better legislation and designing quality training and employment programs to develop carriers and jobs for school leavers. Danny’s journey to become the chef and teacher he is today was unconventional. He began his training in 1999 as a cook in Switzerland in conjunction to being an au pair for a local family while backpacking around Europe. He later trained at the acclaimed West Wind Inn in Canada and attended the Grange Cookery School in England. His first post as a young chef was at the fashionable Asia de Cuba restaurant in St. Martins Lane Hotel, London. Twenty years of Danny’s experiences have fueled his passion for food, travel, and exploration—thirsting for his next great food and drink adventure!
