GOSPEL | Blind Boys of Alabama

The Blind Boys of Alabama are an institution and a tradition that they themselves break from in order to give the music room to breathe. The six-time Grammy Award winners take spirituals and gospel standards and give them a secular twist — or the other way around with songs by artists like Tom Waits or the brilliant mash-up of "Amazing Grace" with "House of the Rising Sun." The Blind Boys of Alabama first began singing together after meeting as children in 1939 at the Alabama Institute for the Negro Blind, in Talladega, Alabama. The group still sports two original founding members, Jimmy Carter and Clarence Fountain. Get sanctified.

The Blind Boys of Alabama open for Marc Cohn on Thursday, March 22, at The Vine at Del Lago Resort, 1133 State Route 414. 8 p.m. $23-$55.;
