Re: “School 41 to close and a new school to open in its place

The board will no doubt select some consulting group that has expertise at turning around schools. They will take every penny available and then some. After three years they will be gone. No emotional commitment, just a short fix. Throw it into the pot of 30 years of failure.

If the board was courageous they would give the school to the people who want to work in it and the parents who will send their kids to it. They would also make sure the school operators have autonomy from the Superintendent and her constraining tentacles. Lastly, they would guarantee that any confining union expectations were loosened. This is all very unlikely. Courage is not embraced by those who are content with the status quo.

Re: “School 41's future uncertain

Its all a game and Mr. White and others in power are simply mastering the moves.

Re: “Activists push district to hire more teachers of color

"Our children won't see that diversity if we don't do something differently," White said. Now that is a profound statement. Unfortunately he is talking about hiring more people of color to work in the district and while this would be helpful it won't happen with fidelity and even if the ratio does change, those employees won't stay because the bigger issue is not being corrected. The Rochester City School District is one of the worse school systems in America and it has been for many years. It is a place where leaders continue to tinker with change knowing it will not influence their power and those of us on the front lines are getting beaten down by policies, processes and procedures that are dishonest and degrading.

Why in the world would any intelligent person of color who has employment options work for a system that is so broken? It is not the type of employee that will have the greatest positive influence on student achievement, only the dismantling of the current centralized, unpredictable, out of touch Broad Street offices will do. Schools need to be run by people who have an emotional commitment to the community and they need the autonomy to determine their own path. The existing system ensures the status quo and until something radically different takes hold all of the other conversations are really wasted energy, cheap talk or both.

Re: “White still pursuing military school

Faith has nothing to do with this. You guys are leasing the University of Rochester's name. Give any other institution $10 million like you did the U of R and you will have more takers. And before you brag about East, why not allow the public and press inside to see for themselves? Everyone knows you guys have circled the wagons to make things appear like they are swell. As I said, there only a handful listening anymore and none of them are parents or kids stuck in your system.

Re: “White still pursuing military school

It is a huge waste of time that will never happen. The talk from Mr. White is now sooooo old. No has faith in any of his ideas. This school is not needed and never had any chance to happen. He knew this but he pushed it because it shows some attempt to promote change. The RCSD has never been in such bad shape.

Re: “RCSD's new code downplays suspensions

I do not see how an already stretch budget is going to be able to supply all of the supports required to make this work. Restorative justice is not a program. It is an approach, a philosophy and it requires buy-in at all levels, which he will never get and can't mandate. It also requires core resources that provide the social and emotional supports these kids need. Again, these are unlikely to happen with the fidelity required. There is no heart and soul behind any of this and the end result will be more disruption, less learning time and more people leaving.

Re: “Superintendent search closed to the public

Totally agree with Josh. This makes me believe they have a current central office insider or someone else within the system already identified. A strong outside candidate would not object to being "out there" That is how it is done. I might add that not selecting someone until June 30 when it requires 6 months to a year before they become acclimated is ridiculous, but this is all par for the course.
