INDIE ROCK | Bike Thief

It takes a lot of courage and skill to successfully build one of those grand, sweeping chamber rock songs. When a band starts to layer in strings, a choir, and horns, it takes a deft precision to do it with subtlety — or it's going to just end up a pretentious mountain of "Look How Cool I Am." That's why Bike Thief's recently released album, "Stuck in a Dream," is so impressive. The Portland-based band is still fairly young (it came together in January 2013) but this debut album plays like it took a couple of year of careful planning. Art rock, a little folk — and some great psychedlia on the track "Somewhere New" — seamlessly combined with choral vocals and classical instrumentation. If you were a fan of Arcade Fire's "Funeral," Bike Thief will be well worth your time.

Bike Thief will perform with Talking Under Water, Dreameaters, and Skunk-Worth on Sunday, October 12, at the Bug Jar, 219 Monroe Avenue. 8 p.m. $7-$9. Bugjar.com; bikethief.bandcamp.com.

Summer starts June 21, so with beautiful weather inevitable during the next few months, there's no reason to stay home. We say it every year, but it's always true: Western New York comes alive during the summer months.
