The interests of Bill Dobbins, director of the Eastman Jazz Ensemble, span a wide swath of the history of jazz, but there is no doubt that his major passion is the work of Duke Ellington. So, it's no surprise (but quite a treat) that the second half of the ensemble's December concert will consists of nine Ellington/Strayhorn arrangements of selections from Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker Suite. The band will also premiere new pieces by jazz majors Gabe Condon and Greg Chako and play works by Stewart Fischer, Manny Albam and Bob Brookmeyer.
The Eastman Jazz Ensemble performs Wednesday, December 4, 8 p.m. at Kilbourn Hall, 26 Gibbs St., free, esm.rochester.edu.
