JAZZ | Victor Wooten

Bassist extraordinaire Victor Wooten rose to fame with Béla Fleck & The Flecktones, but he packs more than enough power on his own. Watching Wooten on stage, it's clear that his bass is an extension of his being. You'd have to go back to the great Jaco Pastorius to find a bassist capable of coaxing such a variety of beautiful tones from his instrument. Whether he's slapping, picking, or strumming the strings, Wooten makes the bass sing.

Victor Wooten plays with Aqueous and Amanda Lee Peers during Party in the Park on Thursday, July 30, at Manhattan Square Park. 5:30 p.m. Tickets are $5. cityofrochester.gov/pitp; victorwooten.com.
