To an outsider first seeing this, it sounds like you're taking the highest-achieving poor kids out of the district. The population that is left is a population of equally poor students with low academic achievement. This helps the students that get out, but it makes it worse for those who are left in. What am I missing here?

On Garrison Keillor's Writers Almanac show this morning on WXXI-FM, he read a brief piece by writer Molly Ivins that reminded me of your column this week: "I am not anti-gun. I'm pro-knife. Consider the merits of the knife. In the first place, you have to catch up with someone in order to stab him. A general substitution of knives for guns would promote physical fitness. We'd turn into a whole nation of great runners. Plus, knives don't ricochet. And people are seldom killed while cleaning their knives."

This New Year's Day will mark our seventh annual Recovery Day party. I've never been much of a New Year's Eve celebrant, but my wife and I used to spend New Year's Eve with friends in the country. I'd go to bed early and get up the next day and make my world-famous french toast for those gathered--a couple dozen friends. That happened for several years, and then the wife died, and their New Year's party went with her. The next New Year's Day felt odd with nothing to do, so the following year I instituted Recovery Day. From late morning till early afternoon, I stand at a griddle and make french toast. I use about a dozen loaves of day-old Monk's cinnamon-raisin bread and about the same number of eggs. Since I personally don't like maple syrup (although I do serve it), I add sugar and a number of spices to the egg mixture. We also serve coffee, teas, and hot chocolate. East guest brings a brunchy nosh--preferably vegetarian--and the variety is great. This is a day to recover from the night before (if necessary), the year before, or anything else made the previous year troublesome. In addition to eating, the primary activity is socializing with neighbors and friends and, usually a number of folks you know.
