Re: “Lessons for Rochester from Raleigh

I have one child who spent k-12, one starting his senior year, and one going in to 5th grade, all in Raleigh.
While the county is seemingly too large for all the schools to be together, it does have advantages. Bill was right about the biggest advantage for us being the whole county shares the bill, yet, it really sucks when the outlying areas have to close for ice when we didn't get any. The magnet program was designed to encourage higher socio-economic families to attend inner city schools. Being a huge county means we have lots of magnet programs, even If it means longer bus rides. I can also tell you, firsthand, that bussing doesn't always, mean longer bus rides. My older two were bussed, but there were only 3 stops; their trip was about 30 minutes. I have friends whose kids go to more neighborhood schools, who make stops every 50-100 feet; the average bus ride is 45-60 minutes.
Hopefully the idiotic powers that were are done trying to argue to end bussing, and essentially re-segregate schools. I would have thought about pulling them out immediately! I will not go back to that era with my kids. Schools with mostly poor kids don't get teachers or supplies. I applauded Del Burns for his statement. The quote from the parent who asked his kid of his friend was white or black, but didn't want them to see skin color is stupid. Why would he ask if didn't want the kid to see skin color. I have never asked any of my boys what color theor friend was!
I'm sorry that Steve's sister has had an awful experience. We've had 2 horrible teachers, but both retired. We've also been super lucky that the boys only went to 1 school each at each level (elementary, middle, high). My oldest 2 at the largest high school in the county (not Garner), and with no trailers. As a matter of fact, none of my children have gone to a school with temporary trailers.
Raleigh's school system's issues have always been growing too fast, and an inability by leaders to foresee what that would mean.
