LECTURE | Harry Lang: 'Fighting in the Shadows'

Two relatively disconnected worlds — of hearing and of deaf people — slide against one another, the former understanding precious little about the latter. And except for a few household names, there hasn't been much acknowledgement of deaf individuals throughout history. Author Harry Lang's latest book, "Fighting in the Shadows: Untold Stories of Deaf People in the Civil War," sheds light on the stories of deaf individuals, both soldier and civilian, during that pivotal time.

Writers & Books will present Lang in lecture about his book on Thursday, September 7, at Rochester Academy of Medicine (1441 East Avenue). Lang will share stories from his book, giving the perspectives of deaf soldiers, artists, clerks, and cooks. An ASL interpreter will be present at the event. The talk takes place 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. and is $5. For more information, call 473-2590 x 107. Register online at wab.org.
