LECTURE | Khuram Hussain on the Black Panther Party

When I was in growing up, there was little discussion in school about the Black Panther Party's contributions to the Civil Rights Movement. And if the organization was mentioned, it was vaguely dismissed as a group of domestic terrorists. No mention was made of the programs it held to elevate black children's self-regard, or the successful food programs organized in many cities. On Friday, May 6, Hobart and William Smith Colleges Professor Khuram Hussain will present a talk, "Exceptional Educators: The educational philosophy and methodology of the Black Panther Party," at the Flying Squirrel Community Space (285 Clarissa Street). Hussain's research delves into the Black Panther Party's role as skilled educators of children and adults alike, and explores how we can learn from the group's philosophy and method of teaching at the grassroots level.

The lecture will take place from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. There is a suggested donation of $5, but no one will be turned away for lack of funds. For more information, call 678-6870, or visit thesquirrel.org.
