"Who needs a God when you've got Satan?" If you've been to a metal show in the past decade, the chances that you've seen that theologically confusing phrase printed on the back of a T-shirt are pretty high. It's the de-facto mission statement of New Orleans black metal giants Goatwhore, who unlike its bayou peers in Eyehategod and Down, crawled out of the Louisiana swamps with Darkthrone records tucked under its arms. Its latest record, 2014's "Constricting Rage of the Merciless," is pure, whiskey drenched, blasphemous black metal, with songs like "F.B.S." (a pretty NSFW acronym) and "Poisonous Existence in Reawakening" coming across as the closest possible aural equivalent to spiked gauntlets. Satan still rules.
Goatwhore will play on Friday, March 3, at the Montage Music Hall, 50 Chestnut Street. 7 p.m. $15-$17. themontagemusichall.com; goatwhore.net.
