Khalil Gibran Muhammad is the director of the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, and the author of "The Condemnation of Blackness: Race, Crime, and the Making of Modern Urban America” (Harvard). The Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemorative Address was instituted in 2001 to promote issues of diversity, freedom, civil rights, and social injustice.
