New East End whiskey bar offers late night kitchen 

Doc Holliday, a well-known member of Wyatt Earp's posse, was a notorious gambler. In a way, it's a fitting name: Jon Wegman and Chris and Greg Joy are rolling their own dice on a new East End venture, Doc Holliday's American Whiskey Bar and Grill (7 Lawrence Street).

Greg and Chris Joy have been in the bar and restaurant business for years. The brothers opened the South Wedge Colony Bar and Grille on South Avenue and the American Burger Bar and Beer Boutique in Greece, and in fact, many of the menu items at Doc Holliday's borrow from the American Burger Bar menu. Greg is in the kitchen creating menu items like The Holy Grail ($12), a burger sandwiched between two grilled cheese sandwiches and loaded with cheese, bacon, mayo, pickles, lettuce, tomato, and onion.

Have you ever been getting down on a trash plate and thought to yourself, "I'm a busy person; I wish I could walk and eat this at the same time"? Enter the Colony Cup ($6), a 32-ounce cup filled with tater tots, meat sauce, macaroni salad, and more meat sauce. The kitchen at Doc Holliday's is open until 1:45 a.m., a bonus for the East End crowds that need a plate after a night of boozing.

The Baja Plate ($16) pairs either chicken or Angus beef with your choice of fries, tater tots, or mac salad, and then tops the whole thing off with chopped bacon, onion rings, and barbecue mayo. Vegetarians won't find much on the menu beyond appetizers, like the fried ravioli served with marinara sauce ($5) or the fried jalapeño chips ($5).

Wegman says he sees Lawrence Street as a central location for music in the East End, with Anthology right across the street, and he plans to have live music at Doc Holliday's. The space includes a patio out front with a fire pit.

And true to its name, Doc Holliday's has more than 20 different whiskeys available, along with craft beer and a cocktail list.

Doc Holliday's American Whiskey Bar and Grille is located at 7 Lawrence Street, and is open Wednesday through Friday, 4 p.m. to 2 a.m., and Saturday, 12 p.m. to 2 a.m. You can find them on Facebook at facebook.com/DocHollidaysAmericanWhiskeyBar.

Glen Edith Coffee Roasters (23 Somerton Street) will hold an espresso and latte art class on Sunday, April 23, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sapphire Courchaine will show off her artistic skills and demonstrate how to make all those milky patterns and swirls. Tickets are $25 and can be purchased at gastronautsacademy.com.

Roux (688 Park Avenue) will host a gin tasting on Tuesday, April 25, from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m., featuring a history lesson about the spirit, plus a sampling of four different styles. Tickets can be purchased for a 6 p.m. or 8 p.m. seating, and are $25 per person. Visit rouxparkave.com to purchase tickets and make a reservation.

Food Truck Rodeo season is upon us. The first date is Wednesday, April 26, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., at the Rochester Public Market (280 North Union Street). Live music will be provided by Beatles cover band, 8 Days a Week. More information at cityofrochester.gov/foodtruckrodeo.

The Strong National Museum of Play (1 Manhattan Square Drive) will host its next Happiest Hour on Wednesday, April 26, from 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. The 21 and over event features a cash bar with brews from Roc Brewing, a performance by Elvis Impersonator Patrick Johnson, and snacks from Marshall Street Bar and Grill and Sugary Delights. Proceeds from the event will support the museum's educational mission and outreach programs. Tickets are $17 and can be purchased on the museum's website at museumofplay.org.

The Angry Goat Pub (938 South Clinton Avenue) will host a sour beer tap event on Wednesday, April 26, from 4 p.m. to 2 a.m. Pucker up and try a selection of four sour beers. Drafts are $1 off and flights will be available as well as special food pairings. theangrygoatpub.com.
