OPERA | 'Così fan tutte'

Mozart's "Così fan tutte" is the latest in the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra's annual concert opera performances, and a somewhat unusual choice to follow crowd-pleasers like "Carmen" and "La bohème." The plot of "Così," in which two sisters develop surprising affections for each other's fiancés, was long considered morally distasteful. One translation of the title is "Women are all like that." But its sour possibilities are sweetened by ravishing music, and "Così fan tutte" is now rightly considered a supreme Mozart opera. Ward Stare conducts a compact cast of six — sopranos Rebecca Farley and Maria Valdes,mezzo-soprano Sofia Selowsky, tenor Jonas Hacker, baritone Craig Verm, and bass-baritone Sam Handley — along with the RPO and the Madrigalia Festival Chorus, directed by Cary Ratcliff.

Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra presents "Così fan tutte" on Thursday, May 9, 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, May 11, 8 p.m. at Eastman Theatre's Kodak Hall, 60 Gibbs Street. $24-$106. 454-2100. rpo.org.
