OPERA | 'Die Fledermaus'

Johann Strauss' "Die Fledermaus," which premiered in 1874, certainly wasn't the first Viennese operetta, but it has remained one of the most popular. That's probably because it contains all the necessary operetta ingredients: mistaken identities, narrowly-averted adultery, ladies' maids masquerading as ladies, waltzes, and champagne — lots of waltzes and lots of champagne. "Die Fledermaus" is perfect summer entertainment for opera lovers, who can flock to Canandaigua this weekend for this Finger Lakes Opera production, conducted by Gerard Floriano and directed by Gary John La Rosa.

On Saturday, August 11, FLO will also present a free family performance of an opera for children, "Little Red's Most Unusual Day" (10:30 a.m.), and an Opera Pops concert (7:30 p.m.; $20-$35) of operatic and Broadway selections by the Finger Lakes Opera Young Artists and FLO Orchestra. All performances are at the Canandaigua Academy, 435 East Street in Canandaigua.

Finger Lakes Opera will perform "Die Fledermaus" on Friday, August 10, at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday, August 12, at 2 p.m. $40-$75. fingerlakesopera.org.
