Re: “Politics, violence, and the city’s mayoral race

Oops, forgot the other candidate. For those who want to see a fair analysis of this issue, that includes all of the parties, please see this piece in the D&C.…

Re: “[UPDATED] This week in the mayor's race: Friday, February 17

I see that this is filed as a "News" story by a veteran journalist. Not a blog. Not an opinion piece.

This is news?
This sounds like a self defense declaration best posted on Facebook.

"Lets talk for a second.

Are you feeling spent? I am. But like a junkie, I cant stop paying attention to every soundbite, every Tweet, every minute of Melissa McCarthy on SNL. Im infected with politics.

Its affecting us locally, too. This years hotly contested mayors race has wound people so tight that even a routine crime report has a couple of the candidates at each others necks. (My boss may write more about this in her column next week, and I dont want to steal her thunder.)

Im on vacation next week, so Id like to step away from this column on a positive note.

I truly wish the best for everyone in this race. To do otherwise is to wish failure on a potential mayor and on the city. How destructive would that be? This is my home.

(Ive only ever, in my long journalism career, secretly rooted for one candidate to lose. And if you knew who I meant, you wouldve been right there in my kitchen with me, dancing, when the election results came in.)

I am a Rochester story, and Im proud of it. My family has been here since the turn of the 20th century my great-grandmother, Rose Natale, rode the Jack Rabbit at Seabreeze.

My father grew up on Whitney Street and my mother on Bartlett. I drive by her old house sometimes ..."

Re: “Sheppard, former police chief, considers mayor run

Oh, please, really Ms. Fien?
"A battle between Barnhart and Warren would be fascinating and undoubtedly ugly. The two have quarreled publicly in the past and neither is known for backing down or for playing nice just to make people comfortable."
Why not just say its a 'catfight' between two women while the respectable gentleman stands above it all.
Whether you meant to draw that picture consciously, or just subconsciously, draw it you did.
Why not keep the mayor's race about issues, and finally stop with the identity politics of personalities engaging in ugly fights: that is your conjecture (maybe your secret hope), and does not deserve to be in a news article.
Any you know it.

Re: “The presidential race and the hatred within us

Only half of the hate is discussed, sigh. It's PC to discuss the anti Muslim anti Mexican hate spewed from the right, but the anti-woman hate screamed from both the right AND the left is unsaid, ignored, unrecognized. After all, we wouldn't want to say ANYTHING that could be construed as supporting Hillary, right? Same thing happened in 08 with Palin, sexist vitriol, but hey, it's all right, her politics are wrong so all is fair. You can be against the bias and hate without agreeing with the candidate.

Re: “Lovely Warren says city schools would be her first priority as mayor

So Ms. Warren does not want mayoral control, but besides spending $119 million dollars for education that is administered by the Superintendent, with oversight by the School Board, she now wants to have the main focus of the mayors office also being education. If education is Ms. Warren's prime focus, she should run for Commisioner for the Board of Education rather than for mayor. If we don't have mayoral control, then the mayors office has other priorities that should take precedence.

Re: “Duffy's smackdown of Warren defies history

I don't understand why people won't stand behind their comments with their full name. I don't read the comment if there is not a person brave enough to stand behind it.
