Stonewall Riots: A License to Resist

“Stonewall”, a pivotal event that framed the early days of the LGBTQ human rights movement, is
recognized as the birth date of the Gay Pride Movement. Timothy D. Judd, an experienced history
teacher and educator who researched gay liberation history with a focus on Rochester, will address the
gay and lesbian homophile organizations prior to the Stonewall Riots, including its causes up to the
formation of the Rochester Gay Liberation Front at the University of Rochester in 1970. Registration
opens Tuesday, July 23.

Apollo 11: “My Dad Was In TV News”

Steve Fentress, Director of the Strasenburgh Planetarium at RMSC, will discuss what it was like to grow up as a space cadet when his late father was a producer for CBS News during the Mercury and Gemini programs of the early 1960s. Steve will show lavish press kits from the 1960s, plus a slide show of pictures and video clips from the era when everyone watched space shots on three broadcast TV
networks. Registration opens Wednesday, July 24.
Classical Guitarist Peter Fletcher

New York classical guitarist Peter Fletcher, a Master of Music graduate of the Eastman School of Music, will perform the popular Spanish classic “Recuerdos de la Alhambra” by Francisco Tarrega, the exciting “Rumores de la Caleta” by Isaac Albeniz, William Walton’s fiendishly difficult “Five Bagatelles”, and four preludes by Manuel Ponce. Don Hall offers a look back at his long career as Director of the Strasenburgh Planetarium at RMSC,
including how he came to that position and what led up to his arrival in Rochester in 1968. Previously,
Don was on the staff of the University of North Carolina’s Morehead Planetarium where he was head
instructor to astronauts on the Project Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo Missions. Registration opens

Mental Health Awareness Teen Book Club

For Ages 14-18. Characters living with mental illness is the theme of this summer’s book group. Led by Young Adult (YA) Librarian Lyla Grills and YA aide and psychology graduate student Amber Spencer, we will discuss novels and the different mental illnesses highlighted in each. Pick up a copy of the selected book in the YA area.
