PROGRAMS FOR ADULTS

The library will be open Saturdays from 10 AM-1 PM effective July 6-August 24. The library will be closed Sundays effective June 30-September 1.

For Ages 18+. Explore “A Universe of Stories” and complete one raffle slip for each book read to be eligible for weekly prizes.

Sweet Bites: A Taste of Poetry Over the Lunch Hour Tuesday, August 6, Noon-1:00 PM
Taste the sweetness of poetry paired with dessert and coffee. Registration opens Tuesday, July 23 and is requested but not required.

Stonewall Riots: A License to Resist Tuesday, August 6, 7:00-8:00 PM
“Stonewall”, a pivotal event that framed the early days of the LGBTQ human rights movement, is recognized as the birth date of the Gay Pride Movement. Timothy D. Judd, an experienced history teacher and educator who researched gay liberation history with a focus on Rochester, will address the gay and lesbian homophile organizations prior to the Stonewall Riots, including its causes up to the formation of the Rochester Gay Liberation Front at the University of Rochester in 1970. Registration opens Tuesday, July 23.
Book Discussion Group Thursday, August 15, 7:00-9:00 PM
Penfield Librarian Kim Catalanello hosts the monthly Book Discussion Group meeting. This month's selection is Educated by Tara Westmore, led by Ernie Orlando. Copies of the book will be available at the circulation desk beginning July 18. No registration required.
Wednesday Teas Book Review Wednesday, August 7, 1:00-2:00 PM
The “Wednesday Teas” book review series coordinated by Librarian Kim Catalanello is co-sponsored with the Penfield Recreation Department. No registration required.
Apollo 11: “My Dad Was In TV News” Wednesday, August 7, 7:00-8:00 PM
Steve Fentress, Director of the Strasenburgh Planetarium at RMSC, will discuss what it was like to grow up as a space cadet when his late father was a producer for CBS News during the Mercury and Gemini programs of the early 1960s. Steve will show lavish press kits from the 1960s, plus a slide show of pictures and video clips from the era when everyone watched space shots on three broadcast TV networks. Registration opens Wednesday, July 24.
Classical Guitarist Peter Fletcher Thursday, August 8, 7:00-8:30 PM
New York classical guitarist Peter Fletcher, a Master of Music graduate of the Eastman School of Music, will perform the popular Spanish classic “Recuerdos de la Alhambra” by Francisco Tarrega, the exciting “Rumores de la Caleta” by Isaac Albeniz, William Walton’s fiendishly difficult “Five Bagatelles”, and four preludes by Manuel Ponce. Registration opens Thursday, July 25.
34 Years In the Star Factory Thursday, August 22, 7:00-8:00 PM
Don Hall offers a look back at his long career as Director of the Strasenburgh Planetarium at RMSC, including how he came to that position and what led up to his arrival in Rochester in 1968. Previously, Don was on the staff of the University of North Carolina’s Morehead Planetarium where he was head instructor to astronauts on the Project Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo Missions. Registration opens Thursday, August 8.

Mental Health Awareness Teen Book Club Tuesdays, July 23 & August 6, 3:00-4:00 PM
For Ages 14-18. Characters living with mental illness is the theme of this summer’s book group. Led by Young Adult (YA) Librarian Lyla Grills and YA aide and psychology graduate student Amber Spencer, we will discuss novels and the different mental illnesses highlighted in each. Pick up a copy of the selected book in the YA area.
Practice College Entrance Exams Presented by Chariot Learning For Those Entering Grades 11-12.
Take a practice exam under simulated, timed conditions and then discover your score. Bring pencils, a calculator, and snacks if you wish.

For Those Entering Grades 5-8. Learn about the planets of the solar system with Joe Altieri from the astronomy section of the Rochester Academy of Science through pictures, scale models, and discussion. Registration opens Thursday, July 25.
A Universe of Ukuleles with Bach 2 Rock Monday-Thursday, August 12-15, 3:00-4:00 PM
For Those Entering Grades 6-12. Four introductory, fun-filled ukulele group lessons! Bring an uke or borrow one. Registration opens Thursday, July 29.

Summer Stories ‘N’ More Story Times Tuesdays, June 25-August 6, 10:30 – 11:00 AM
For children ages 3-6. Preschoolers are invited to enjoy stories, songs, and finger plays presented by our children’s librarian. Parents/caregivers are welcome, but not required to attend. Older siblings are also welcome. No registration required.
Summer Family Story Times Mondays, July 1-August 5, 10:30 – 11:00 AM
For children of all ages, with an adult. Families are invited to enjoy stories, songs, and finger plays presented by our children’s librarian. This program is geared for toddler and pre-school children not yet comfortable leaving their parent/caregiver. No registration required.
BLAST OFF with Galaxy Goodies* Thursday, August 1, 3:30-4:30 PM
For children entering grades 1+. Registration opens Thursday, July 18 for Penfield town or school district residents and Thursday, July 25 for all others.

For ages 6-11. Do you love to build with LEGOs? Come join other LEGO fans for our Library LEGO Lab! We will provide all the LEGOs, you bring your imagination. Registration opens Friday, July 19 for Penfield town or school district residents and Friday, July 26 for all others.

Save the Date: Reading Game Celebration with Airplay* Monday, August 5, 7:00-8:00 PM
For Reading Game participants only; parents and caregivers welcome. Jeff Peden will entertain us with his fast-paced juggling, unicycling, and comedy show that will keep you mesmerized at his seemingly bottomless bag of stunts. After the performance, we will honor our reading game participants by presenting them with special reading certificates and you will have the chance to pick up your weekly raffle winnings one last time. Registration is required and begins Monday July 15 for reading game participants.
Special “K” Story Time & Craft Monday, August 26, 10:30-11:15 AM. For children entering kindergarten this fall Our annual summer program is designed for children entering kindergarten in September, 2019. Come join in the fun as we read stories and make a simple craft celebrating this special event! Registration opens Monday, August 12 for Penfield town or school district residents and Monday, August 19 for all others.
