POWER POP | Pouty

With a deliberately lo-fi sound reminiscent of greats like Guided by Voices and PJ Harvey, Philly-based upstarts Pouty wear its influences proudly. The project's mastermind, Rachel Gagliardi, cut her teeth in the fantastic band Slutever before distilling her inspirations down to a fine point for Pouty. The band's latest release, "Saint Mary of the Moods," is a concise and powerful offering of power pop craftsmanship. The EP's opening track, "Who Will Hold the Door for Me?" rings with an almost eerie omnipresence that calls to mind the best Japanese Breakfast tracks, while songs like "Bathe Her" and "The Pink Moment" burn with a steely, Cat Power-esque confidence. It's a record created by a creative mind who is fully aware of her muses and follows their call effortlessly, leading to some wonderful results.

Pouty will play with Idle Bloom, Tandygrey, and Today, Junior on Monday, October 2, at The Vineyard Community Space, 836 South Clinton Avenue. 7:30 p.m. $5 suggested donation. All ages. facebook.com/vineyardcommunityspace; poutypouty.bandcamp.com.
