PROG-ROCK | Stolas

The formidable shadows of The Mars Volta and Circa Survive loom large over Stolas. Still, while the Las Vegas-based band may wear its influences on its sleeve, the music never sounds overburdened by the inspiration each member brings to the table. Its latest, self-titled LP is lush with intricate guitar ambiance, soaring vocals, and balancing act drumming from bandleader Carlo Marquez. Tracks like "Bellwether" and "Anecdoche" blend layer after layer of breathtaking percussion with the occasional wailing guitar solo peppered in for good measure. It's prog-rock that you can still bang your head to; what's better than that?

Stolas will play with Mylets, Icarus The Owl, Alberto Alaska, and Pushfire on Friday, March 31, at Montage Music Hall, 50 Chestnut Street. 6:30 p.m. $12-$15.;
