Remmereit named new Rochester Chamber Orchestra artistic director

Arild Remmereit, former music director of the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, has been named artistic director of the Rochester Chamber Orchestra. This follows a February benefit concert for the RCO led by Remmereit after his split with the RPO in late 2012. The 2013-14 season for the RCO will be the last for founder, music director, and conductor David Fetler; after its completion Fetler will become conductor laureate. Remmereit plans to expand the RCO's season in 2014-15.

The Rochester Chamber Orchestra is made up of musicians from the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra and faculty from the Eastman School of Music.

The full press release follows:

For the upcoming 2013-2014 season, David Fetler will mark his 50th anniversary year as Music Director and Conductor of the Rochester Chamber Orchestra. He founded the RCO in 1964 when he was a conductor at the Eastman School of Music. The players are drawn from the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra and from the Eastman School artist faculty.

Arild Remmereit conducted a highly successful benefit concert for the orchestra on February 24th, 2013. He was recently named Artistic Director. Remmereit plans to expand the season in 2014-2015, when David Fetler becomes Conductor Laureate. Over the years, Fetler has conducted the RCO in a wide variety of music from the 17th Century to contemporary times, including new works and commissions. The orchestra recorded for Albany Records Howard Hanson's Organ Concerto with David Craighead as soloist and the Nymphs and Satyr Ballet Suite. The orchestra has also been heard nationwide over National Public Radio.

RCO Sunday concerts are held at the Hochstein Performance Hall. David Fetler will conduct Handel's popular MESSIAH on December 8th, 2013 at 7PM and on March 30th, 2014, at 3PM, a program of BACH, MOZART AND MORE. Arild Remmereit will open the season on October 27th, 2013 at 3PM for a program to include a Haydn Symphony, music by a woman composer and other masterworks. And, on February 16th, 2014 at 7PM, Remmereit will offer a thematic program with a literary element and a connection to regional or historic significance such as Women's Rights or The Underground Railroad.
