Re: “Waking up to another country: CITY's post-election commentary

A writer from The Atlantic summed it up well. The media "took Trump literally, but not seriously", but his supporters "took Trump seriously, but not literally". Well, I took him literally as well and am/was appalled by his words. I, too, spent yesterday in mourning. But in truth, we don't have the luxury of despair. Our nation is deeply wounded and is in urgent need of healing. It is up to each of us to figure out how we might be part of that healing. It is also up to each of to do what we think is best to hold our legislators to much higher levels of civility, honesty, and adherence to fundamental American values, calling out racism/xenophobia/misogyny as soon as it appears.

Re: “Trump heads the GOP? What is this country coming to?

"Ignorance is Bliss"... Apparently Trump believes this, and so do his supporters. They rant against "leftwing progressives" who are forcing their beliefs (for civil and voting rights, gender equality, LGBT rights) onto everyone, but have no problem with Republicans wishing to force their beliefs (homophobia, limiting voting rights, assaults on women' right to won their own bodies, racism to the extreme). Adding to the "ignorance" part is Republican's refusal to accept scientific evidence of climate change and other important issues. Lord have mercy!

Re: “The monarchs of mushroom forest

Bravo to these guys! I live out in Wayne County, and they are right. There are many small farms (and homes on acreage that could be boutique farms) out here that could be purchased by enterprising young folks. Many of us are hoping more organic operations will spring up around here like it is around Ithaca. The Ithaca farmer's market is entirely organic! Why not here? There is plenty of opportunity!

Re: “Rochesterians doing great things behind the scenes

Wonderful to hear about these valiant folks and their efforts to improve life for all Rochester's citizens. Now, how about some contact information so The Rest Of Us can get involved with supporting some of their work? Thanks!

Re: “Rochester Muslims share their experiences

Thank you for this article. I hope there will be more that outline some interfaith activities that are ongoing. We need to have opportunities to talk with one another and work with one another on common community concerns to combat the horrible fear mongering that is now going on, especially within the Republican presidential contest.

Re: “Profits or passing grades?

In NYS, Pearson designs/sells the tests that are used to evaluate students and teachers, and makes sure that they are designed so that the majority of students fail. Pearson designs/sells the remedial materials and progress monitoring materials that districts are required to implement to "fix" the failure. Pearson designs/sells online resources that worried parents/teachers/districts use to help. It is a "fixed" system alright, and Pearson is the only winner. Follow the money, for money is "the root of all evil". None of this has anything to do with improving education or benefiting kids.

Re: “Parent makes tough decision concerning RCSD

RCSD has to face this "invisible elephants" in the room; namely, that 10% of the students are sucking 100% of teacher/administrative energy; that RCSD clerical staff do NOT make folks feel welcomed (not in schools or in Central Office); that many if not most employees are exhausted, demoralized, and uninspired due to the overwhelming challenges they face every day; and that the center of gravity for student performance is very low due to poor parental involvement and commitment to education. RCSD does teach values (honesty, integrity, kindness, etc.), but city streets do not. Kids are only in school 6 hours, 5 days a week; the rest of the time The Street is their teacher. I hope more time and space in City will be devoted to how this very sad and serious problem can be better addressed.
