Re: “Tensions build over a new RBTL theater

Rochester has neither the economic nor the population critical mass to justify the expenditure of tens of millions of tax dollars on the construction and maintenance of a huge performing arts center. But if the RBTL and private investors want to put up 100% of the money because they think they can make a go of it, then by all means they should step forward and do so. In other words, put up or shut up.

Re: “Affording the arts

(I posted this in June in another context, but it bears repeating in this instance.)

While the anti-cultural barbarians are indeed at the gates, it should not be overlooked that many of their weapons were handed to them by pseudo-intellectual, self-styled aesthetic mavens who the artistic community allow to dictate their cultural standards.

A local case-in-point that could provide obvious fodder for those seeking to denigrate public art was the Memorial art Gallerys ill-advised hiring of Tom Otterness to provide statuary for their Centennial Garden. While the works themselves were bland enough, Otterness previous involvement with his shot dog video (in which he adopted a dog from a pound, tied it up, shot it, filmed its death throes, and presented the video to the world as a work of "art") would make any civilized person question why federal monies, either directly or indirectly, should be used to subsidize the work of such a despicable person.

Re: “The state of the union in the age of Trump

johnny - Demagogue Donny is certainly taking back the country. The only question is how far he's taking it back.

Given the extent of the arrogance, ignorance, irresponsibility, religious jingoism, nepotism, saber rattling, borderline graft, and disregard for the rights and needs of the common men and women, it looks like he's taking us back to about 1898.

Re: “For Dems, a wealth of candidates

One must not confuse quantity with quality.

We know there are many candidates for the school board, for city council and for the mayor's office.

We also know (whether or not we want to admit it) that none of the incumbents in those offices have made a dent in the social, political and economic problems that are burying Rochester .

The only open question is whether any of the challengers have the ability and desire to rock the boat enough to at least start to pull the city and its schools out of it's downward spiral of violence, failure and complacency.

I one, am not optimistic.

Re: “Campaign focus will include Parcel 5

(Sarcasm Alert!) Two great choices. for Parcel 5. A performing arts center that will be empty for most of the year. Or a festival site that will be empty for an even larger percentage of each year.

I guess the decision should be based on which bright idea will waste less of the taxpayers' money.

Re: “Trump gets the Ax treatment in Rochester street art

While Trump is undoubtedly a dispicable individual, this "art" is WAY over-the-top.

And even as a liberal, I have to agree with those who argue that had this been done with an image of Obama, accusations of racism would be flying fast and thick.

Re: “Trump camp takes aim at the arts, again

Johnny - I feel your pain. I know I hate it when I have to pay school taxes, even though I have no children in the district, just to subsidize the educational costs of other peoples' children.

Or when part of my state taxes are diverted to help pay for some huge sports complex that I'll never visit.

Or when my federal tax dollars go to pay for a bloated Pentagon that outspends the next 10 biggest military budget countries COMBINED.

As to Demagogue Donny having done a great job so far, I'll pass by that comment in embarrassed silence.
