Re: “Tests reveal a lot or nothing at all

Having been a long time fan and reader of City Newspaper, I found myself extremely disappointed in the reporting of this article. Macalusco mentions students at #58 school performing 17 percent proficient in English but he fails to mention the number of students that opted out of the test. School 58 had one of the highest opt out rates in the state of NY. One hundred percent of 8th graders opted out last year at the school alone. Only a handful of students actually "sat" for the test compared the the majority of students who sat for it in Fairport. I would expect City Newspaper to dive a bit deeper than treading in shallow water presenting only one thread of the story. The direct comparison between the city schools and the suburban ones in this fashion supports what so much of the community already believes; that you simply cannot get a good education in the RCSD. There is already enough institutional Racism within our city. This doesn't help.

Re: “A soccer team gives us an example of patriotism

Dear Readers and commenters above,

Before you comment about how disrespectful these gentlemen were in their actions, I would like to challenge you to do some work around empathy.
Can you put your "stuff" aside and look through someone else's eyes?
Can you search for understanding someone's else feelings and emotions other than your own? Our children are trying to tell us something, peacefully. Instead of arguing whether or not we think its right or wrong, why don't we just listen?

Thank you Mary Anna Towler for hearing them.

Re: “Anger and dismay over Rochester teachers' contract boil over

The behavior of the school board member and the random disruptive guy mirrors what is happening in our schools and even in our world. Anger, rage, and sadness was prevalent at this meeting just as it is in the RCSD. Hope prevails when we start to really listen to each other and create the space for everyone to be able to safely express their feelings, and allow them to exist. Where do we need to start? I am not sure, but I know every day as a RCSD teacher and parent, I listen and try to teach my students and children how to listen to each other. I also allow them to feel it all. I am choosing hope and will hold and carry the good, because even though there is a lot of darkness, there is more light. You just have to look harder.

Re: “Rochesterians doing great things behind the scenes

Thank you CityNewsPaper for focusing on interesting, newsworthy causes and the humans behind them. We all need more reminders of this kind of work and humanity at its best. Onward and upward Rochester.

Re: “Parent makes tough decision concerning RCSD

Clearly Ms. Raethka's worst decision in 2015 was to write this opinion blog contributing to the negative media coverage of the RCSD. Personal decisions are one thing but sharing it with media and discouraging families from moving into the city? Shame on her.

Re: “Human toll of school suspensions is devastating

" And it’s going to require teachers and administrators to create a different kind of school experience." I would like to request that we create a different world in which we put children first.

Re: “Many city teachers not up to par, says new report

Dear City Newspaper, You have let me down. I have always valued your approach, your honest reporting, your integrity to tell the truth. The headline alone reads like most main-streamed media reporting on education. This like so many articles on education, implies that once again teachers are to blame, because of course we have to blame someone. I expect this kid of reporting from some publications, but not you.
