It ain't necessarily soul, but Jason Isbell is a for-sure soul singer. He writes with an inward wonderment turned inside out. His songs are thoughtful and courageous with an unflinching allegiance. It's in him and it has gotta come out. Born in Greenhill, Alabama, his southern roots are prevalent but not restrictive. Emotionally he'll knock you over like a ton of bricks.

Jason Isbell performs with Craig Finn on Tuesday, May 26, at Water Street Music Hall, 204 North Water Street. 8 p.m. $25-$30.;
