SPECIAL EVENT | Fringe Street Beat

Closing out the 2017 Keybank Rochester Fringe Festival on Saturday is perhaps one of the Fringe's fastest-growing events. Street Beat, an afternoon-long dance competition taking place on Gibbs Street, attracts some of the best dancers in the region — look out for groups like TRU ART, a recently formed dance squad that has performed at major festivals like the Puerto Rican Festival and partnered with other Fringe artists for shows that combine dance and poetry. Competitors will dance it out in squads of three, and the winning team will walk away with a $1,500 cash prize, meaning dancers won't be just showing up on the day of; many work on their choreography and tighten up routines in the days leading up to the event. DJ Fleg is handling music.

Fringe Street Beat takes place Saturday, September 23, on Gibb Street. Preliminiaries start at 12 p.m. and finals start at 3 p.m. Free to watch; $5 per team to compete.
