SPECIAL EVENT | 'Heroes: A Video Game Symphony'

A good soundtrack is key to a good video game — and just like in film, when a score is great, it can easily stand alone and is immediately recognizable. The Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, over the last few seasons, has shown how well great video game soundtracks translate to the stage, with concerts tackling the music of the Final Fantasy and Legend of Zelda series. The RPO on Thursday will present its fourth video game special concert, "Heroes: A Video Game Symphony." Guest conducted by Miriam Burns, the orchestra will be joined by the chorus Madrigalia for a program that dives into some of the more epic tracks in video gaming: The Elder Scrolls, Final Fantasy, BioShock, Portal, Halo, and more. Like with previous concerts, scenes from the games will be projected onto screens while the orchestra performs, and cosplay is encouraged.

After the concert, a panel of gaming experts will hold a Q&A session. Shannon Symonds, curator from The Strong Museum's International Center for the History of Electronic Games, will lead the panel, and will be joined by Rob Mostyn of RIT's MAGIC Spell Studios; Ryan Hamlyn, director and producer of the "Heroes" concert; guest conductor Miriam Burns; and Mark Watters, an Emmy Award-winning composer and director of the Eastman School's Beal Institute.

"Heroes: A Video Game Symphony" will take place Thursday, October 26, in Kodak Hall at Eastman Theatre, 60 Gibbs Street. 8 p.m. $24-$77. 454-2100;
