Kokedama is a style of potting up plants in a ball of moss and displaying them in a dish or suspended in the air. Sometimes called the “Poor Man’s Bonsai” or “string gardens,” the art of binding plants into lush green, mossy spheres and exhibiting them dates back centuries to the Edo era in Japan. Modern day, Kokedama are becoming increasingly popular due to their nearly self-sustaining nature and their space-saving qualities.
