The one-act operas, which appear to have never before been performed side-by-side, present parallel stories of young unmarried women who give up an illegitimate child. One, Sister Angelica, is from the nobility and is sent to a convent as punishment for bringing shame to her family. The other protagonist, Carmela, is forced to leave her son in an orphanage when she marries a man who is not the boy’s father.
