THEATER | "Hands on a Hardbody"

People will go through a lot for the chance to win a new vehicle. In the musical "Hands on a Hardbody" — Blackfriars Theatre's next show, and the audience pick at the company's Season Soiree last year — the competition is simple: 10 Texans try to outlast each other with their hands on a brand-new Nissan "hardbody" pickup. The last person standing drives it home. The relatively recent Broadway musical, with book by Doug Wright and music by Trey Anastasio (of Phish) and Amanda Green, is based on a documentary of the same name, in which a competition in Longview, Texas, lasted 77 continuous hours (we can assume the Blackfriars show won't be quite as long). This production is co-directed by Mary Tiballi Hoffman and Danny Hoskins, with musical direction by Matt Wegman and choreography by Mandi Griffith-Gurrell. An interesting bit about this show: it took Blackfriars and Hoselton Nissan around six months to find the right model truck to use in the show — well, you've got to have a real truck on stage.

"Hands on a Hardbody" will be performed Friday, March 17, through Sunday, April 2, at Blackfriars Theatre, 795 East Main Street. Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. (7 p.m. on Saturday, March 18); Sundays at 2 p.m.; and Thursdays, March 23, and March 30, at 7:30 p.m. $31.50-$39.50. 454-1260;
