Author Thomas C. Sanger presents the story of his grandmother, Rhoda Thomas, was aboard the British passenger ship Athenia when it was torpedoed and sunk by a German submarine, hours after England and Germany declared war on Sept. 3, 1939. Ms. Thomas survived the sinking and returned home to America, where she wrote about her experiences.
